Francis M. Meeker Collection, 1920-2004.

Collection consists of digitized letters written by Francis Meeker to his mother, Mary, and various friends during World War 2, letters he received during the war, correspondence to and from his mother about his and Denny's service, Denny's letters to his mother, a war-time photograph album, and miscellaneous items such as discharge forms, publications of the 6th Armored Division, and personal notebooks. Also contains 2 audio cassettes of interviews of Francis and Elsie Meeker conducted by Dr. Martin T. Olliff at the Meekers's home in Dothan, Ala., August 15, 2003, and February 25, 2004. Francis discusses his wartime service; Elsie discusses life before, during, and after the war.

Francis Meeker, born 1912 in Bonifay, Ala., served as a sergeant in the 6th Armored Division of the U.S. Army during World War 2. He drove and commanded a tank on the Allied drive into Germany after D-Day. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Meeker's twin brother, Denny, was killed in the North African campaign. After World War 2, Meeker and his wife, Elsie, married in Dothan, Ala., where they and another Meeker brother owned a grocery store until retiring in the 1980s. In 2003 and 200...
